Nampak has 3 667 permanent employees, with the majority based in South Africa — the site of our headquarters and most of our operations.

Employees in Nampak operations in South Africa are represented by seven trade unions and those based in Nampak operations in the Rest of Africa are represented by eight trade unions.

Our culture is inclusive and we value diversity. Our people operate within a clearly defined governance framework and must all adhere to the group’s ethics policy. Recognising that our people provide Nampak with a sustainable competitive advantage to ultimately deliver on the group’s strategy, we have a comprehensive approach to managing them.

The underlying principles of our people policies include: freedom of association; transformation that delivers an environment that is conducive to equality, fairness and transparency and the prohibition of victimisation.

While safeguarding the health and safety of employees in our operations is a priority – their motivation, skills, competence, training and development are also critical to the successful delivery of our strategy.

Transformation

Transformation is imperative for the company to deliver an environment which is conducive to equality, fairness and transparency.

We undertake to continually address within our employee base any inequalities present with regard to race, gender and disability and to accelerate progress through structured skills development programmes and the injection of talent.

We acknowledge the value of understanding and responding to our stakeholders’ interests, to ensure that our operations are sustainable and that we maintain our licence to operate.

We believe that a diverse and transformed workplace adds value in the form of improved employee capabilities and shared values that strengthen motivation and enhance employee productivity, and ultimately improve society.

We recognise that effective partnerships with trade union representatives as well as structured engagement forums reduce, and can prevent, the risks associated with industrial action.

We engage actively with regulators and government authorities to ensure our compliance with various regulations and standards, and to contribute constructively to policy formulation.

People development

Our mission is to have a flexible, highly skilled workforce with the right knowledge, skill, attitude and behaviour, in order to fully participate in an ever-changing business environment.

We continue to focus on building business competencies aligned to our group strategy.

Nampak has developed in-house training and development opportunities for managers and supervisors in the group. The programmes are designed with input from leading universities to meet national qualification framework requirements in South Africa and to ensure that the course content is updated and aligned to the group’s strategy and skills requirements. The courses have relevance in all countries and we encourage employees from our operations in the rest of Africa to attend.
